Intermezzo murder trial nearing conclusion
• 29 Nov 2007 •
THE trial of the ‘Intermezzo’ case, named after the yacht in which the crime is alleged to have taken place, is almost concluded. The French couple on trial are accused of having killed solo French yachtsman André Le Floch, the owner of the ‘Intermezzo’ tri-maran off the Algarve coast. The Lagos court has scheduled December 14 for sentencing.
In his closing argument, the public prosecutor asked for a heavy sentence for the accused. The defence has pleaded that the crimes of theft and desecration of the body be dismissed. The two French citizens, a man and a woman are charged with first degree murder, robbery, and desecration and attempted concealment of the body. They may serve up to 25 years in jail. The two sons of the victim were present at the hearing and asked for a compensation of 150,000 euros. When the Portuguese Navy answered a distress call in August 2006, the rescue team found the Intermezzo trimaran capsized off the Algarve coast. Two of its occupants, the French couple, were found on a lifeboat and rescued. The Navy was able to tow the trimaran into Portimão harbour and the body of the owner of the yacht was found with his hands and feet tied.
A Judicial Police inspector told the court the autopsy revealed that André Le Floch´s death was caused by asphyxiation through strangulation. | Return to Top
