John Lamonby Exhibition announcement
• 29 Nov 2007 •
A NEW exhibition of work by English artist, John Lamonby is on display at Loulé’s Municipal Art Gallery in Convento Espirito Santo.
Few artists in the Algarve have achieved such a prestigious following as John Lamonby. A modest man from the north east of England, his work is a colourful combination of ideas. Using oils and acrylic paints, his palette suits the decorative concepts of many homeowners, combining abstract designs with surreal ideas. A long-term resident in the Algarve, last year John spent several months in India. When he returned he moved from Vale do Lobo to set up a new studio and home in Olhão. These changes have inspired him to come up with a plethora of fresh images. In the gallery’s entrance hall there is a collection of brand new paintings depicting the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, produced specifically for this exhibition. Unlike many of John’s previous paintings there are recognisable figures and boundaries between the sky, land and sea. Cool shades of blue and green are layered on top of each other and creamy silhouettes of people blend into the landscapes.
In the same room, on a huge canvas, there is ‘Anjo’ – angel – painted by John during summer 2007 for Loulé’s Festival Med. Together with twelve other international artists, John was commissioned to produce a painting for the festival.Other rooms inside the gallery contain work more typical of his style with detailed observations of bristling textures and wiry surfaces. Paintings such as ‘Looking for Orpheus,’ take some figuring out, each observer discovering Orpheus where they want to find him in a jumble of lines, shapes and layers.John’s most recent picture, ‘Ria,’ is painted in this genre. White is the predominant colour with mists of grey. A tranquil mood is conjured up without any recognisable shapes for reference. Surrounded by a slightly roughened white frame it has all the qualities for which John has become famous. Attending the exhibition’s opening night was Costa Pinheiros, one of Portugal’s most important living artists, along with John’s son and daughter who had travelled from Britain to attend the inauguration.
The show continues until December 15th.
