Sea Life protests against whale hunting

• 29 Nov 2007 •

Humpback whale: Protected species since 1963.THE European Network of Sea Life Centres has initiated a boycott against Japanese products in a fight against the Japanese whaling fleet which is heading for the South Pacific to capture humpback whales. According to an announcement by the European Network of Sea Life Centres, their protest against this supposedly ‘scientific’ expedition involves the withdrawal of its 25 Japanese manufactured aquariums along with any other Japanese products they have on sale. They see economic pressure as the most effective way of protecting these animals, and are urging everyone involved in environmental protection to avoid Japanese products this Christmas. The Sea Life Network has said it is of the utmost importance that the current ban on whaling be maintained as it has resulted in the humpback whale going from being in danger of extinction to ‘vulnerable’, according to the World Conservation Union list. The species has gone from barely 1,200 of its kind four decades ago to between 30,000 and 40,000 today. Humpback whales have been protected since 1963, a ban which does not affect countries with a long tradition of whale hunting which capture only a small number necessary for their subsistence.
