Bigger budget for Malaga University

MALAGA UNIVERSITY will increase its budget by 6.7 per cent for 2008, bringing the total amount to 268 million euros. Most of this will pay staff, while 71.4 million will be spent on investments, especially on new buildings on the Teatinos campus. A new vice-chancellor will be chosen on January 23; the votes of the university doctors will count for 55 per cent of the result, professors and staff 10 per cent and pupils 25 per cent.

Family tries to kill daughter

LOCAL POLICE officers in Malaga have prevented an 18-year-old girl from being stabbed by her  father, aged 52, and two brothers, aged 24 and 16. According to police sources, the officers happened to be patrolling in Calle Ollerias in Malaga City, when they intervened in the family fight and arrested the father - who was allegedly brandishing a large knife - and his sons.

According to the same sources, the victim said that her family had threatened to stab her to death and she showed them knife marks that had been left on a wall from their attempts to kill her. Fortunately, she was able to escape from these initial attacks.

Police stated that when the officers arrived at the scene, they could see the brothers trying to hit their sister and allegedly heard them threatening her by saying: “I have to kill you.”

The three accused  men apparently resisted arrest and continued to reproach the victim, who was then taken to the Provincial Police Headquarters to give a statement.

According to the emergency services, an entire floor in the building had to be evacuated and the as yet unidentified man’s apartment has been   completely destroyed.

Neighbours alerted the emergency services and Local Police after they heard the explosion.
