Body found in natural reserve river

THE services of the Guardia Civil, Local Police and officers from the Frigiliana Civil Protection Department as well as four Firemen were needed to extract the body of an elderly Belgian man from the Higueron River in an area known as ‘Cahorros del Higueron’. This river bed area which connects Frigiliana and Nerja is a popular hiking place.

According to police, the body displayed no signs of violence and they suspect the senior – who was around 86-years-old – died of natural causes. The body was spotted by a German hiker in a very rocky area which is known to be a particularly complicated and perilous hiking route.

No post-mortem has been carried out yet and, although the body has been identified, autorities have not been able to contact his family and the matter may have to be put into the hands of the Belgian embassy. Reportedly the body was beginning to decompose, leading the officers to suspect that he had been in the river for a few days. According to the same sources, no one had reported the man missing.
