Young hiker rescued

• 29 Nov 2007 •

Difficult terrain for hikers.LOCAL POLICE in Nerja  were called out to rescue a young girl who was on a hiking excursion in the Sierra de   Amijara, Tejada and Alhama mountains as part of a group of students and teachers from the Velez-Malaga Instituto de  Enseñanza Secundaria Reyes Católicos Secondary School. The youngster apparently began to suffer from severe lower back pain when the group of 12 students and two teachers were on their way to visit the spectacular Cuesta del Cielo area.

According to the emergency services, the young girl was unable to walk because of the pain and doctors who were called to the scene couldn’t reach the area to help her. Local Police officers were called and brought in an all- terrain  vehicle in a bid to reach the stricken girl.

However, accessing the specific area where the group was still proved difficult as the paths leading to the Cuesta del Cielo had been damaged by the recent storms. However, Local Police officers were finally able to make contact with one of the teachers who managed to lead the group to an area suitable for the all-terrain vehicle to gain access. The injured girl was evacuated to Collado Romero.

Sources said that the group had managed to descend approximately 500 metres on their own, but had to call in the emergency services after it became clear that the young girl could not continue to walk any further.
