THERE are more 30-year-old mothers in Malaga Province than 20-year-old mothers, according to figures taken by the Andalucia Statistics Institute during the first trimester of 2007. Specifically during this period 2,499 women aged between 30 and 39 decided to become mothers while only 1,673 women aged between 20 and 29 (49 per cent less) had children. According to the same institute, the average age for motherhood has increased significantly since 1975 when the average age was around 28.9. From 1989 onwards, the average age of new mothers increased non-stop with an average age of 30.4 already registered in 2005. A sociologist from Malaga University has explained that the causes lie in lifestyle changes and are mainly linked to the increase in women in the workplace. Women will delay having a child to find their niche in the work environment. The sociologist also stressed that in today’s society men as well as women want longer lasting youth and therefore less responsibilities until later on in their lives.
