Endangered bird sighted

• 29 Nov 2007 •

THE Eurasian Bittern - Botaurus stellaris – a wadiTHE Eurasian Bittern - Botaurus stellaris – a wading bird of the heron family, Ardeidae, is listed in the Libro Rojo de Vertebrados Amenazados de Andalucía (Andalucia Red Book of Endangered Vertebrates) as being critically endangered, according to the GENA - Ecologists in Action Association. Examples of this species, also known as the Great Bittern can be very large , often up to 75 centimetres long.

GENA claims the species has not been seen in the Rio Velez river delta in nearly half a  century, only making three  appearances – once in the Río Guadalhorce River, once in Fuentepiedra Lake and a third time on the Costa del Sol. The association also reports that one of these birds has recently been sighted in the Rio Velez delta.

GENA have submitted a  scientific report to the Environmental Department, informing them of the presence of the bird and hoping to protect it from possible aggression. They are asking that any bird ringing should be forbidden in the area and that an officer be employed to safeguard the area.
