Coin restores ancient church

COIN Town Hall is planning to restore an old cave church dating back to the eighth century. The cave has held a local carpentry for more than 50 years and the town hall is now negotiating to acquire the building.

This church is just one of many in the province dating back to the times when the Arabs ruled the peninsula and Christians had to perform their rites in secret. Even today, many people are not aware the church exists. More famous are those in Archidona, Ronda and Ardales.

It is believed to have been created between the eighth and tenth centuries but a team of experts is evaluating the area to find out more about the church.

The town hall hopes to make it part of Coin’s cultural heritage.
