Silves mayor against high tension pylons

• 18 Apr 2008 •

Silves Mayor Isabel Soares.THE Mayor of Silves has issued a warning that the local Council will go to court to stop a high tension pylon route between Tunes and Portimão if the national electricity network company REN decides to carry on with its plans. Mayor Isabel Soares said: “I hope REN changes its attitude and that we find a solution, otherwise we're going to court.”

The Silves Town Council and residents of Vale Fuzeiros have participated in a meeting on Monday, along with REN representatives, the national board for energy and geology, the Portuguese Environmental Association and the Committee for Coordination and Regional Development of the Algarve, the Water Institute and the Institute for Preservation of Wildlife. After the meeting, the Silves Mayor stressed she is sending an official statement to inform the Environment Minister of what happened at the meeting and then we'll wait and see how he reacts. I hope that a solution is found otherwise this will end up in court.” Vale Fuzeiros residents said new protests are being prepared.
