Galeria Off the Wall Christmas shimmer
• 18 Apr 2008 • LOCAL artists in the Algarve have exercised their talents to produce some unusual presents for Christmas.
Handcrafted mirror frames and good luck hamsas by Tara Esaguy are really eye catching, as are gorgeous enamelled pictures and jewellery made by Susan Searle. Her latest design in necklaces, based on Zuni Indian carved gemstones, is truly special.
For a Christmas gift made from stunning Portuguese marble, German sculptor, Udo, has produced some magnificent examples. In contrast, Taran Flaten brings the sparkling properties of glass to life. Creating multi-coloured windows, candlelights, wall ornaments, glass bricks and tiles, she employs several interesting techniques involving the fusion of float glass in a kiln. Like the enamel pictures and jewellery made by Susan, Taran can never be certain exactly how the final piece will turn out. This is an aspect of the process that results in every item being absolutely inimitable. Her wall plaques that often feature patterns from the natural world - such as leaves or raindrops - are mounted onto wood, stone or ceramics. The background texture is in marked contrast to the smooth sheen of the glass.
The glass fusion method that she uses has developed continuously over 2,000 years, only being eclipsed in 500 AD when glass blowing became the most popular technique.
By returning to this old craft and introducing her personal artistic ideas, Taran has gained a growing reputation for creating beautiful objects.
Another artist with similar skills is Lothat Krell whose lamps in Tiffany style are highly desirable. Angels - suitable for making mobiles or hanging on the Christmas tree - and delicately framed mirrors make attractive and inexpensive gifts.
These and other items are on sale at Galeria Off the Wall.
