Beware of fake charities scams
• 22 Mar 2007 • SEVEN minors have been found to have been asking for money claiming to belong to an NGO which is collecting donations to build a centre for deaf and dumb children throughout the world.
They are collecting money on the streets with a piece of paper on which people are asked to leave their name, postcode and the quantity they have donated. This sheet of paper has no official stamp or insignia and police are warning people not to fall for the scam. It is believed that there are itinerant families or clans behind these scams who are forcing the children to beg or even commit crimes.
In less than 48 hours, seven minors under the age of 14 and two young girls, all of Romanian origin, were found performing this type of activity. According to the police, it is not a crime, so they were not arrested and there are no charges against them because of their age.
In the first case, two youngsters were caught who had already collected 300 euros. The next day, five girls under 13 were identified when on their way to a copy shop to make the sheets on which they collect signatures. A few hours later, two 20-year-olds were caught asking passers-by for money for charity and had already earned 150 euros which they disposed of under a chair at the police station.
The next day, two minors, aged 13 and 16 were found collecting money under the same pretext and had 150 euros hidden in their shoes. They told police they had been sleeping in a car. One of them had a mobile phone and police tried to contact their parents who pretended to be unavailable. The children have been taken into care and the parents are wanted for enforcing child labour. | Return to Top
