Follow up on fire in Los Palomares

• 05 Dec 2007 •

THE investigation carried out by Scientific Police and National Police into the fire that occurred in the Los Palomares neighbourhood in Cruz del Humilladero, Malaga, has resulted in a 25-year- old man being arrested and charged with attempted murder.

According to a police source the conclusion of the investigation has revealed that the accused set the house on fire while his ex-girlfriend and their five children where still inside, among them a nine-year-old girl and a baby.

The accused had apparently not been able to accept the fact that his ex-girlfriend had broken up with him as a result of the domestic violence she had suffered at his hands.

Investigating officers say the accused suffered serious burns to 70 per cent of his body as a result of the blaze and remains in the intensive care unit at Carlos Haya Hospital in a critical condition. His 30-year-old ex-girlfriend suffered burns to 35 per cent of her body but is now in a stable condition.

She now allegedly faces charges of crimes against public health due to nearly one hundred bags of illegal drugs being found inside the house following the incident.

The Scientific Police team have determined – with the help of witnesses - that the accused was angry about the break-up and turned up at the house with a can of gasoline. He spread the fuel all over the floor of the house, threw the rest over his clothes and set himself on fire. Officers believe that he prevented the woman and children from escaping from the flames.

This hypothesis is also supported by traces of other flammable liquids found on his clothing.
