Mayors with an old touch

SIX politicians in Malaga province have now held positions as mayors for more than 23 years, with the Mayor of Juzcar, Diego Fernandez, the longest running in Spain with 34 years service. When elected for the second time in 1979 the town had less than 200 residents.
The mayors of Algarrobo, Algatocin, Almogia, Cartajima and Comares have held their positions since 1983, while the mayors of Ardales, Benadalid, Benalmadena and Alfarnate have held their positions for two decades.
Not all the mayors –some of whom are unpaid - plan to run in the next elections, stepping aside for younger people with new ideas. |  Return to Top
