First fines for businesses

• 05 Dec 2007 •

Wheelchair. Sanctions for not contracting disabledIN RECENT years disabled people have gone from just receiving help to claiming a place in the work environment. The law now states that public and private businesses with 50 or more employees should reserve two per cent of places for disabled people but, in actuality, very few do this. Companies can avoid employing disabled people if they have a legitimate motive, such as production or technical reasons.

Work inspectors looked at 17 companies in the province from the beginning of this year until June. Five have been given fines adding up to 5,402 euros for not integrating disabled people into their workforce. These sanctions are the first given in Malaga since the change in the law in 2000. In the last seven years 280 inspections have been carried out.
