Delays in cultural centre

• 05 Dec 2007 •

TOWN Hall sources in Alhaurin el Grande say that the Junta de Andalucia Council of Public Works has refused to subsidise the 3.8 million euros required to pay for the final phase of construction on a new cultural centre.

The first phase of the building was completed by Easter but construction has been halted for the past six months.

The complex is being built in the centre of the town on the site of an ancient slaughter house.

When it is completed, the planned three-storey construction is intended to house a new public library, as well as the headquarters of the ‘Gerald Brenan Foundation’, a Spanish literature centre and several exhibition and multiple-use halls.

Until now, the town hall has financed the costs and the first phase – consisting of the main structure and the parking space areas - which have totalled more than a million euros, is completed.

It was originally planned that the centre would have two underground floors to allow for around a hundred parking spaces but this idea was abandoned in favour of one floor with around 55 spaces.
