Exotic species rehabilitation success

• 05 Dec 2007 •

AROUND 50 volunteers from the Environmental Protection Group have collaborated with Malaga Town Hall and an Andalucia association dedicated to the collection of exotic and indigenous flora and fauna, in the rehabilitation of more than 700 species.

This environmental awareness and collection campaign has been operating in Malaga city throughout 2007 and will continue during the coming year.

This year, more than 450 Florida turtles have been collected by the volunteers and returned to the Torremolinos Crocodile Park and other authorised centres. Other reptiles including iguanas were found mainly in streams and parks and have since been returned to their owners. Around 300 indigenous amphibians and reptiles including snakes, frogs, turtles and chameleons which are listed as protected species were also recovered.

The president of the association involved in the scheme explained that environmental education is the key to making citizens more aware of the need to protect and preserve Malaga’s natural heritage. He stressed that the main problem for biodiversity is the loss of natural habitats and the introduction of invasive exotic species which can be dangerous to indigenous fauna and to humans.
