Lighting up time
• 05 Dec 2007 •
CHRISTMAS is coming and all throughout the province, shops and shopping centres have installed all kinds of festive lights. One of the most spectacular and best known is the display which decorates the different branches of El Corte Ingles. The lights were lit at all of them on November 23 amidst a great festive atmosphere which even included a visit from Father Christmas and his helpers, with sweets and story telling. Hundreds of light-bulbs create the nativity scene and other spectacular decorations to warm up the cold nights.
Whereas some 20 years ago, shops in Spain showed no sign of Christmas approaching until a few days before December 24, nowadays, windows are full of decorations and shopping centres flooded with the sound of carols at around the end of October.
In the old days, most parents left the purchasing of gifts until the last minute but, according to local toy shops, hundreds of people have already bought or reserved their family’s presents, often benefiting from discounts and ensuring their children get what they want.
For the little ones, this year’s star products are the Loro Molon, a parrot which dances, whistles, eats, talks and learns to obey orders (between 60 and 80 euros); Bebita, a 41cm baby doll which can be fed and have its nappy changed (between 60 and 87 euros); and the Rayo McQueen pedal car (about 175 euros).
However, older children prefer technology and the most popular gifts are the PSP in its Slim version, costing 170 euros and the famous Wii from 250 euros.
It has also started to really feel like Christmas in Malaga with the first snows falling on peaks above 1,600 metres throughout the province, such as Almijara, Tejeda and the Sierrra de las Nieves, bringing temperatures tumbling down, helped by strong winds that make it best to dress in several layers because the sun is still shining.
So, enjoy the season, wrap up warm and go out to enjoy the lights! | Return to Top
