Algarve ready to welcome the New Year
• 13 Dec 2007 •
TO CELEBRATE the arrival of 2008, the different municipalities in the Algarve will be putting on a show and preparing the streets and squares for concerts and plenty of entertainment.
In Albufeira, the New Year event will take place at the local marina and Pescadores Beach. Four nights of concerts will bring to Albufeira some of the most important Portuguese artists and a large fireworks display launched from five different locations.
The celebrations will begin on December 28 with a live concert by Mundo Secreto at Albufeira Marina; on the following day Portugal’s most popular rap band Da Weasel will play live at Pescadores Beach and, on December 30, Pedro Abrunhosa will appear at Albufeira Marina. These concerts are scheduled to start at 10pm. On the last day of 2007, David Fonseca will kick off the party at Pescadores Beach and after the fireworks display and multimedia show at midnight, top international music star Bob Sinclar will entertain a crowd which the local town council believe should this year reach 150,000 people. Aljezur, Faro, Lagos, Odeceixe and Vila do Bispo have announced free musical concerts and fireworks shows on New Year’s Eve. Quarteira will stage a large fireworks display at Praça do Mar, followed by a live concert by Cuban hip-hop band Orishas. Portimão is organising a lively New Year’s Eve party with plenty of light and celebration. For 15 minutes, those who choose the town to welcome in 2008 will be able to watch a spectacle, announced by the local town council as the biggest fireworks and music show in the world. The ‘Prometheus Chant Pyromusical Show’ is scheduled to link the Portimão waterfront to Praia da Rocha with a huge chain of fireworks about six kilometres long, and with 50 launching sites. According to the local town council, 8.5 tonnes of fireworks will be set off to welcome in 2008. There will be three special stages at the Fireworks Festival which the town council promises will provide something unique and explosive for everyone.
The Portimão party will present live music with Reggae and New Orleans Jazz on the Alvor.
Waterfront and a Brazilian style ‘Trio Eléctrico’ will perform salsa, hip hop and other lively rhythms at Praia da Rocha.
To promote this year’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, the Algarve Tourism Board (RTA) have invested 140,000 euros in a media campaign on Portuguese TV channels and radio stations. According to RTA, the campaign, dubbed ‘Algarve for New Year's Eve: stories with a happy ending’ aims at attracting more Portuguese visitors to the region.
RTA president António Pina said: “The Algarve will be in party mood, with a huge programme of entertainment to suit all tastes. For this reason we want to share these moments with visitors but also with residents, because the events have been organised with them all in mind.” | Return to Top
