Driver dies as car demolishes house

• 13 Dec 2007 •

THE driver of a vehicle was killed instantly when his car crashed into a house on the National Road 125 on the outskirts of Faro.

The impact of the car was so violent that it destroyed one of the walls of the house and the resident, who was sleeping inside the house, was woken by the sound of the falling wall.

The car, driven by the twenty-six-year-old victim, an amateur rally driver, was travelling from Faro to Loulé when it failed to make a bend, hit an olive tree and crashed into the house on the opposite side of the road, catching fire.

Inside the house, the fifty-year-old resident was awoken by the sound of the crash at 4:20am and part of the wall coming down on him. He was only slightly injured.

“When we got here we saw the whole tragedy. A car had lost control on the turn because it was speeding and hit this house and caught fire. There is one slightly injured person - the resident in the house. The driver was killed instantly,” said Vítor Afonso, chief of Faro's Municipal Fire Department. He went on to say that accidents are not uncommon on this particular stretch of road on the outskirts of Faro.

“We have witnessed many accidents here. The speed limit is 50km per hour but drivers forget and the consequences are often tragic,” added Chief Afonso. According to official data released by the police, since the beginning of this year, 68 people were killed in traffic accidents on Algarve roads, representing an increase of 50 per cent when compared with the same period last year.
