Damaged cable cuts out communications

MELILLA, the Spanish enclave on the coast of North Africa, has been without mobile phone and internet connection for several days due to a breakage in an underwater cable which connects the city to Almeria.

Teams have been sent from Malaga, Almeria and Madrid to solve the problem which apparently occurred six kilometres from Melilla and a cabling boat is being brought in from Marseille to repair the breakage.

The reason for this problem is unknown but it is believed it may be due to a boat hitting an underwater cable during a storm.

According to the central government, emergency lines are working and 30 per cent of land lines are in order, the problem is information cannot be sent.

This has meant that many local people have been unable to do banking or withdraw money. Newspapers had to cut down on pages as they could not receive national and international news which they usually receive over the internet.

Once service is fully restored, those affected can make complaints to Telefonica.
