Economy Ministry agrees to change pylon route
• 13 Dec 2007 •
THE Economy Ministry has announced that it will be meeting with the Environment Ministry and the national electricity distribution company REN with the objective of speeding up the process of changing the route of a high- tension power line which was scheduled to cross a residential are in Vale Fuzeiros, Silves. The information was sent to the Mayor of Silves, Isabel Soares, through an official note signed by Economy Minister, Manuel Pinho himself.
The minister had previously announced publicly that an alternative route for the power line linking Tunes to Portimão has already been found. The announcement by the Minister came following a protest by about 100 Vale Fuzeiros residents who gathered near the Economy Ministry in Lisbon to demand that the route should be changed further to the north into an uninhabited area. While the protest was taking place, Manuel Pinho told journalists inside the ministry that he had spoken to the president of REN and an alternative fitting the demands of local residents and Silves Municipal Council had already been found.
The Minister however said that before making public the new route he would have to wait for a study on its environmental impact which has to be conducted by the Environment Secretary of State. After hearing the Minister’s statement, the representative of the residents of Vale Fuzeiros, Sérgio Santos, said he was pleased, adding that this could be a turning point in this case which, during the last few months, has caused a lot of distress to the residents of this Algarve area.
Silves Town Council has also confirmed that they were assured by the President of REN, Jose Penedos, that the company wouldn’t oppose the relocation north of the pylon route if the Environment Ministry gives its approval.
Penedos however stressed that with the proposed changes, the pylon route would be in danger of encroaching into some environmentally protected areas which are included in the European Union’s ‘Natura 2000’ network of sites designed to protect the most seriously threatened habitats and species across Europe.
On December 7, REN suspended works on the pylon route, saying they will only start again when the new route has been approved. | Return to Top
