Hashish seized in Olhão

THE Algarve customs authorities and GNR Police have seized one ton of hashish.The drug, with a street value of 1.5 million euros, was packed in 29 bales weighing almost 35kg each. Nine people aged between 26 and 50 were detained.

Police said the maritime authorities had spotted a suspicious boat on their radar approaching the coast of São Lourenço Island, 300 metres from the mainland near Olhão. They kept watch and waited until the suspected drug traffickers had unloaded their cargo from their seven-metre long speedboat. Officers then moved in and arrested five Portuguese men, two Spaniards and two Moroccans and seized the drugs. It is reported that the five Portuguese were local fishermen who had been hired by the alleged drug traffickers to unload the cargo.

Police also said the seized vessel caught fire while

being towed back to shore and then sank in the waters of a clam farm.
