Cláudia Brito- exhibition for the festive season
• 13 Dec 2007 • CLAUDIA Brito’s paintings form the basis of a Christmas and New Year exhibition at Galeria Corte-Real in Boliqueime. Her canvasses are filled with enormous representational figures, giving the impression of eminent characters from history with unimpeachable credentials. Their self-satisfied expressions and powerful body language seem to belie more human qualities that give them depth and warmth.
Cláudia’s studio, in an elevated situation beside Silves’s castle walls, is her retreat. She absorbs her time producing paintings and collages inspired by the surroundings of an atmospheric building and views across the city to the River Arade.
Close by is the cathedral and two figures, seen in a pair of paintings - dubbed by some, ‘the Bishops,’ - might easily have stepped out from saying Mass there, five centuries ago. Alternatively they could be Islamic caliphs who governed from Silves Castle five hundred years before. Claudia does not reveal their origins, only referring to the timelessness of her paintings. Perhaps therefore, they could be present day people, living in a distant land.
A smiling terrier sitting beside one of her figures could symbolise the man’s subconscious mind. Or is it just a savage joke? Cláudia’s work certainly gets the public guessing, some observers successfully sharing her obtuse sense of humour. Others enjoy her paintings purely for their beauty.
Galeria Corte-Real is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. On other days it is open from 10am until 5pm. During the Christmas period it is closed from December 24th until January 5th.
From Fonte de Boliqueime roundabout on the EN 125 follow signs for ‘estação.’ The gallery is in the old railway station. | Return to Top
