Violent youngsters do it for pleasure

• 13 Dec 2007 •

EXPERTS claim that the profile of the juvenile delinquent is changing and they now come from families that are comfortably off. About 1,700 youths have been charged this year and of them 140 minors in Malaga have been admitted to reform homes. One boy was taken to a reform home after beating up another youth and filming it on his mobile phone, in a phenomenon known as ‘happy slapping’.

Before, youths who committed crimes, usually robberies, were often from poor backgrounds and did it out of necessity. Now, about 85 per cent are young males and the rest young females from normal families and they act purely for pleasure.

Statistics support this claim. During this year the Juvenile Courts have seen 207 cases of injury, 169 violent abuses in the home and 127 thefts with violence.

According to the Justice Delegation of the Junta de Andalucia, these three types of violent crime account for one third of the 1,682 crimes for this year (until September) in the province of Malaga.
