Spanish schools fail in the report by PISA

Spanish students: Reportedly below average.

SPANISH schools do not reach the average level in science, language and maths. The level of reading in students aged 15 has fallen “very noticeably”, maths is “slightly less” and science has hardly changed in comparison to 2003 according to a report by PISA (Programme for the International Evaluation of Students).

This report studied the results in schools of 57 countries in 2006. Spanish students obtained 461 points in reading (481 in 2003), 480 points in maths (485 in 2003) and in science 488 points (487 in 2003). The Minister for Education, Mercedes Cabrera, claimed that Spanish students were developing “positively” in science, are “acceptable” in maths and admitted that the reading level of students “needed a lot of attention”.

Finland is the envy of all having received the best results in two out of three categories.

Of the 57 countries evaluated 30 received an average of 500 points while Spain received 488. Colombia received the lowest with 388 points.
