Cosmetic surgery for children

• 13 Dec 2007 •

Ears: Minors request surgery to make them less proTHE Council of Health has announced that although cosmetic surgery on minors does not make up even one per cent of the total procedures carried out – and are nearly all ear corrections – a decree has been created whereby all minors must take a psychological test before undergoing cosmetic surgery. Reportedly, professionals already work with the criteria of not carrying out any kind of cosmetic surgery on breasts until the patient is over 18, mainly because it can result in a late increase in breast size.

According to the Council of Health, most cases of children asking for cosmetic surgery are already supported with a psychological report but the decree will ensure these reports are obligatory. Professionals explained that ear corrective surgery is usually asked for by youngsters between the ages of ten and 14; this is not generally a problem as ears are at their adult size by around the age of eight. This type of corrective surgery is normally requested for boys as the ear defect is more common in males, and females can cover their ears with their hair. Specialists say that children usually begin to suffer taunting at about the age of eight.

The Council of Health say that corrective ear surgery takes about an hour and usually costs around 2,000 euros. The operation consists of bringing the ears closer to the head so they are less prominent. Surgery is normally successful and low risk.
