Festivity drink-driving checkpoints

• 20 Dec 2007 •

Christmas drink: More checkpoints to prevent traffSPECIFIC Christmas dinner drink-driving checkpoints have been set up by the Guardia Civil DGT (General Direction of Traffic) in an attempt to prevent the many alcohol-related accidents which occur on Spanish roads during this particular time of company and family dinners and banquets. According to the DGT, around 20 extra checkpoints will be set up in Malaga Province, all will be carried out in the afternoon and then again at night-time. The DGT announced this will prevent people from drinking and driving during these Christmas meals.

The Guardia Civil spot-checks will be located along main Malaga roads as well as motorways and national roads. The DGT has also asked town halls with populations of more than 25,000 to collaborate with the campaign by setting up Local Police checkpoints in urban areas. Reportedly, Estepona has already agreed to participate in these measures.

According to the DGT, the current permitted levels are 0.5 milligrams of alcohol per litre of blood or 0.25 milligrams per litre of exhaled air. In the case of learners, public transport or lorry drivers, the levels are 0.3 milligrams per litre of blood and 0.15 milligrams per litre of exhaled air.
