EWN’s top ten Christmas movies
• 20 Dec 2007 •
In the spirit of Christmas, here's a comprehensive list of the Top 10 films that you should be watching on Christmas Day, according to The Euro Weekly News.
10: Die Hard – So maybe it's not everyone's idea of a festive film, but when you're stuffed full of turkey and the beers are settling in, nothing speaks family movie more than Bruce Willis in his heyday, saving the innocent from terrorists and all with razor sharp wit and a do or die attitude.
9: How the Grinch Stole Christmas – Jim Carrey was the perfect choice for this adaptation of the classic Dr Seuss story about a miserable monster who wants to steal Christmas, and the hilarious consequences. It's one for the kids and granny will like it too.
8: A Christmas Carol – Charles Dickens' classic tale about a miserable miser forced to re-evaluate his life after a night of ghostly visitations is perfect whether you want the Patrick Stewart version, Alistair Sims or even The Muppets. This is the best in family entertainment.
7: The Snowman – You probably know the song, but what better way to settle the kids down and try to capture some festive magic, with this tale of a boy who builds a snowman that comes to life...
6: Gremlins – …and maybe a little later, on come the Gremlins. One of the darker Christmas films that has ever been released, it also stars one of the cutest creatures ever put on celluloid: Gizmo. The kids will love the comedy (especially the granny on the stairlift) and you'll love them too.
5: Bad Santa – You should definitely wait until the kids are in bed before you put this one on. Certainly the best Christmas film in some time, Billy Bob Thornton plays an alcoholic Santa impersonator who uses his cover to rob shopping malls. Rude, offensive and downright hilarious, this is one that will have you giggling into your eggnog
4: A Nightmare Before Christmas – You might think this is a bit scary for the kids, but one of the best things about Tim Burton's masterpiece is that the kids love it more than you. When the King of Halloween tries to take the place of Santa, it's one of the best comedy sequences ever, and you'll still be singing the songs on New Year's Eve.
3: Scrooged – Although A Christmas Carol appears elsewhere on the list, there does need to be a special mention of this adaptation. Starring Bill Murray as Scrooge, the story relocates to the busy world of television. Although there is nothing really new in the story itself, Murray is so hilariously mean that it makes it almost a little sad when he becomes all repentant at the end.
2: Miracle on 34th Street – For the true aficionado, there isn't a lot that beats this story of the question of whether a department store Santa is the real deal or not. This film will get the lumps in the throats more than any turkey and stuffing ball, and at the end of the film even you won’t be quite so sure that Father Christmas doesn't exist. And there are four versions to choose from!
1: It's a Wonderful Life – But there's only one film that is going to top the list of the best watches over the festive season, and that's It's a Wonderful Life. Jimmy Stewart and his guardian angel turn this classic festive treat into the most watched and one of the most popular films ever made. So what if you've seen it a hundred times?
