Fires in Portugal
• 27 Dec 2007 • September review
THE National Forest Resources Authority have released a report which shows that the number of forest fires in Portugal has decreased considerably. The report shows that from January 1 until August 15, there are records of 717 forest fires when the average of the last five years is 3,944.
The report also shows that so far this year blazes destroyed a total of 6,359 hectares of woodland, less than one tenth of the damage caused last year and 2006 was the best one in the five previous years. In the Algarve, 44 forest fires were registered this year, with a total of 211 hectares of woodland destroyed. This year’s largest forest fire, which took place on July 29 at Nisa in the Alentejo, destroyed more than 1,200 hectares with the blaze coming very close to some villages, threatening homes. In terms of districts, Portalegre and Beja have the worst record in the last eight months, but even so, well below previous years.
We will increase the number of fire fighting aircraft next year.” | Return to Top
