Government increases investment

• 29 Mar 2007 •

The government: Investing 1.7 billion euros in winTHE Sub Secretary of state for Industry and Innovation, Antonio Castro Guerra, announced that the Portuguese government has decided to invest 8.1 billion euros over the next five years to develop renewable energy projects. The projects will create around 10,000 jobs, and wind power infrastructure, the largest single project among them, will cost 1.7 billion euros, Castro said at the opening of a biomass plant near the town of Castelo Branco.

In January, Prime Minister Jose Socrates stated that that his Socialist government was aiming to produce 45 per cent of the country’s energy from renewable sources, up from 36 per cent in 2005, making Portugal one of the largest users of renewable energy among the European Union's 27 member states, matching Austria and Sweden.

Portugal also expects bio fuel to account for 10 per cent of the nation's fuel use by 2010.
