World Consumer Day inspections
• 29 Mar 2007 • THE Authority for Economic and Food Safety (ASAE) announced the seizure of one ton of fish during a huge police operation during which hundreds of food transportation vehicles and businesses throughout the country were inspected.
Coinciding with World Consumer Day, 285 ASAE officers also checked hundreds of bakeries and announced that 15 were shut down, mainly due to lack of hygiene in the areas where bread was made. In Albufeira, one bakery was closed but, after the problems had been solved, it re-opened the following day. According to a report from consumer watchdog DECO, the Portuguese like to complain about service, and telecoms, banking and general retail top the list. The report was based on the more than 220,000 requests for information and complaints DECO received last year.
More than 40,000 of the total complaints were related to telecoms, 38,000 general retail and 10,000 the banking sector. DECO told consumers to be wary of aggressive sales pitches, and reminded them to use the appropriate channels in situations that are clearly abusive. The DECO report was followed by a survey from the SEFIN consumer group for the financial sector, which accused tellers at Portugal’s five biggest banks of providing erroneous information about the tax requirements related to market activity including buying and selling shares.
European Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner Markos Kyprianou stressed the key role played by the Commission in ensuring that the rights of consumers are respected across the EU. | Return to Top
