ASAE Chief caught smoking indoors

• 10 Jan 2008 •

THE head of the Food and Economic Safety Agency (ASAE) who is responsible for enforcing Portugal's new ban on smoking in enclosed public places has had a New Year embarrassment after he was photographed smoking a cigar a New Year party in the Estoril Casino. Antonio Nunes was caught on picture breaking the new law on the first day it came into effect. He told daily Diario de Noticias that he was not aware that the anti-smoking law, which applies to cafes, restaurants and bars, also included casinos. After a spokesman for the Ministry of Health confirmed that it did, Nunes said: "We will have to look into what is in the law."

On January 7, after a meeting at the Ministry the National Director for Health, Francisco George confirmed to reporters that the ban on smoking indoors also applies to the casinos; however, he stressed that the casinos can create areas for smokers. To do that, those areas must be in compliance with the law which allows smoking at indoor places, when those areas are separated from the non-smoking rooms and have a special system to extract the air directly to the outside.
