The Algarve prepares for Carnival
• 01 Apr 2008 •
Loule Carnival, the oldest in the region, will celebrate its 102nd anniversary on February 5. The most colourful Brazilian-style parades can be seen during the festival in addition to more conservative and traditional displays.
In Loule the celebrations begin with a parade along the José da Costa Mealha Avenue, in the city centre. The event is organised by Loule Council, which has announced that the 2008 parade will be the biggest yet, although they have not yet revealed which celebrities have been invited to participate in this year’s event.
Portuguese parades during the carnival period reflect a mixture of social and political satire and create a unique blend of cultures, although, over the years, the parade in Loule has become more and more influenced by the Brazilian style, with vibrant music and dancers in colourful costumes.
For those looking for the more traditional carnival parade, São Brás de Alportel will be offering one with revellers and floats expected to pass along the Avenida da Liberdade, the village’s main street.
In Quarteira, Carnival will be celebrated earlier with the first parades scheduled to take place on February 2 and 4, while Vila Real de Santo António will begin on February 3, with a parade through several streets in the city.
The Club Desportivo (sports club) in In Odiáxere, Lagos has organised a parade through the village streets on February 5. And Monte Gordo, Paderne, São Bartolomeu de Messines and Sagres are also preparing parades for February 5. | Return to Top
