Retrospective view
• 01 Apr 2008 • A Recently-opened exhibition housed in Loulé’s 17th century Convento Espirito Santo recalls last summer’s FestivalMed.
The centrepiece is a showcase of photographic images taken by Luis da Cruz, the official photographer of the four-day event.
The outdoor festival is held annually to include street theatre, gastronomy and a selection of music influenced by countries that border the Mediterranean Sea.
Some images are figurative, while impressions of golden sands, an angel and a flying carpet, offer looser interpretations of the theme.
Three Portuguese artists, Adèrita - born in Almancil – Candida Paz from Luz da Tavira and Milita from Albufeira, have widely varied experiences, resulting in very different interpretations.
Working on a textured surface of silk paper - using sand, broken mirrors and sequins – Adérita conveys exoticism and warmth.
Through collage, Candida tells a historic picture-story, brought up to date using threads of present-day newspaper clippings, stuck across the canvas.
Patriotically, Milita has portrayed a couple embracing the Corridinho, a traditional Algarvean dance of love. Inspired by the passions of southern Europeans, the painting suggests more than a hint of sensuality.
Open on weekdays from 9am until 12.30pm and from 2pm until 5pm. The exhibition ends on February 9th.
Convento Espirito Santo is located close to the Museum at the rear of the University. | Return to Top
