Experts from the Portuguese Police met after Internal Administration Minister, Rui Pereira, called an urgent meeting of the Security Coordination Cabinet (GCS). The meeting was called after Spain warned Portugal of a possible risk of Islamist attacks.
Twelve Pakistanis and two Indians have been arrested in Barcelona and charged with planning an attack. According to Spanish police, two Pakistanis linked to the network could have passed through or still be in Portugal. There were fears that Pakistani President, Pervez Musharraf's recent visit to Brussels could increase the risk of an attack in Europe.
There is no information about the possible presence of the Pakistani suspects in Portugal, however, Prime Minister Jose Socrates said that Portugal will take all terrorist threats “very seriously,” despite there being no “special threat” to the country.
The GCS last met several months ago to discuss reports that members of ETA had hired cars in Portugal to stage attacks in Spain. |
