Lourinha to have Jurassic-style park

• 01 Apr 2008 •

INDIAN entrepreneur, Shivendra Rajan Sahay and the Lourinha Council propose to create a dinosaur theme park including a hotel, museums and exhibitions. Called ‘O Mundo dos Dinossauros’ (Dinosaur World), it will take the form of a Jurassic Park-style theme-attraction with a natural prehistory museum housing some of the best examples of fossilised dinosaurs discovered in Portugal.

The project involves a 20 million euro investment, 17 million euros of which is financed by the Portuguese National Strategic Development Plan, Quadro de Referência Estratégico Nacional – QREN, while the remainder will be covered by the businessman, a resident of Portugal for 14 years. It is expected to attract 250,000 visitors a year to Lourinha, which is north of Lisbon.

Representatives from the world leader in theme parks, British consultants Simon Ody and Keith Gray, met with officials from Lourinha Council recently to study the outline of the public-private partnership project. Due to be up and running by 2011, the plan envisages a 35 hectare interactive entertainment area with mechanical moving dinosaurs and a hotel in a 100 hectare site. There would also be an archaeological museum with a tropical garden recreating the flora and fauna that existed more than 65 million years ago.
