Fishing agreement

• 01 Apr 2008 •

PORTUGUESE fishermen will now be able to up their quotas of Norwegian codfish - or bacalhau – thanks to an agreement between Portugal and Norway in Brussels. The bi-lateral agreement states that Portuguese fishermen will be able to catch more cod but fewer frog-fish, while maruca fishing (a white fish similar to cod) has been cut by 13 per cent, mackerel by nine, and Norwegian lobster down by five per cent. However the new agreement has penalised Portuguese fishermen by reducing the number of fishing days from 216 to 195.
