Boosts for inland tourism

• 24 Jan 2008 •

THE regional development commission (CCDR) has announced that tourism will be the main focus for development plans over the next decade but its aim is to move tourism and business to inland areas.

The President of the CCDR, João Faria, has said that they want to revitalise inland towns and villages as they have suffered for many years as a result of population migration towards the sea, where nearly all the development was taking place.

The Algarve coast is becoming extremely overdeveloped and environmentalists are worried about the effects and the speed at which more resorts and developments are being constructed.

João Faria claims that the coast is almost 100 per cent full but adds that he is satisfied with rural development so far and that an increasing number of companies are now based in inland areas including Alcoutim and Castro Marim.

Although these companies could benefit from community funds until 2013, Faria said the CCDR would not directly allocate funds. Instead, companies could approach CCDR with a proposal to purchase equipment and help to subsidise infrastructural construction.

Inland tourism campaigns aimed at tourists who are interested in nature, walking and other outdoor activities have been initiated.

One example is the creation of the Via Algarviana, which is a 240 kilometre pedestrian route across the Algarve. Another route aimed at active holidaymakers, the Ecovia route, which also crosses the Algarve, is expected to be finished within the next few months.

The CCDR will also promote fairs and festivals for tourists as well as residents.
