Beach adapted for disabled people
• 24 Jan 2008 • THE La Cala de Mijas beach is to be adapted for use by the disabled next summer. According to the town hall, specialised equipment will be made available for people with reduced mobility.
A 60 square-metre wooden platform with parasols will be installed, connected to the shore by boardwalks, allowing people easier access to the water. Large floating wheelchairs with aluminium frames and plastic wheels will also be available to enable disabled people to travel accross sand as well as for swimming. Specialised crutches will be provided, with wide bases to facilitate walking on the sand. Members of the Mijas Red Cross will be in charge of all equipment and will be on hand to attend to anyone who needs assistance.
The Mayor, Antonio Sanchez, said that plans are being processed to reserve a number of disabled parking spaces just metres away from the beach. He added that the initiative has been approved in an effort to ensure the right to enjoy the sea and beach in a safe and comfortable way for all citizens, no matter what their physical condition may be.
Other municipal initiatives to improve the quality of life for disabled residents include a free holidays programme for children in the agricultural school or the Centre for Treatment of Disabilities which is currently being built in La Torre with a three million euro investment. This centre is expected to be complete towards the end of the year.
It will occupy a 2,000 square metre area and have a capacity to cater for 100 people. Constructed on a 3,000 square metres plot, it will include green zones for recess, therapy and family time.
The building will include rehabilitation areas, leisure and administration facilities, as well as an area especially for families and a heated swimming pool. | Return to Top
