Velez tourism to be promoted with avocados

• 24 Jan 2008 •

THE MAYOR of Vélez-Málaga, Francisco Delgado, has announced that the town hall is negotiating with several of the companies which export avocados grown in the Axarquia region, to promote tourism in the municipality. The idea is to display a slogan, message or anagram on Velez and Axarquia on the boxes used to transport the avocados. Velez-Malaga avocados are distributed to 29 countries in Europe in five million boxes exported from the municipality each year. Figures reveal that the only other country producing more avocados than Velez is Mexico.

The Mayor has also personally contacted Karlos Arguiñano, the host of a cooking programme on the ‘Telecinco’ Spanish television channel, to inform him that the Axarquia is the main producer of avocados (the programme recently linked the Canary Islands with avocados).

The Mayor explained that these measures are being taken in an effort to defend a native product, the exportation of which is essential for Velez- Malaga and Axarquia economy. The upcoming FITUR event (international tourism fair) will be held on January 31 and Vélez-Málaga will host the ‘Day of the Avocado’ during which all those invited will receive a cocktail made with avocado and dishes prepared by students from the Castillo del Marques School of Hostelry.
