Platform for the defence of underwater meadows

• 24 Jan 2008 •

Zostera: Protected species of sea grass.A GROUP of divers from Nerja have created a citizens platform for the defence and preservation of the scarce undersea meadows of zostera (eel grass) in the Maro-Cerro Gordo Natural Park. These meadows are a protected species which maintain the marine ecosystem. The platform, led by Bernabé Toledo, instructor and manager of the Buceo Costa Nerja scuba diving centre, is asking that the areas which still have these underwater meadows be marked with buoys to prevent drag fishing boats from damaging them.

The zostera meadows of Maro are the last enclave of the species in Malaga Province and one of the few remaining on Andalucia’s coasts. Toledo added that posidonia (another species of sea grass) is only found in small amounts in Mezquitilla, Nerja and Caleta de Velez.

Fauna relying on Zostera ecosystems include certain types of fish, sea urchins, star fish, sea horses and several types of molluscs. Toledo is seeking the support of politicians and ecologists as these plants provide shelter and breeding areas for many species as well as oxygenating the water. The platform will be conducting informative initiatives in schools and public areas in an attempt to make the population more aware of the importance of preserving these enclaves.
