‘BIG BROTHER’ TV

Closed-circuit cameras: Seventeen initially planneSEVENTEEN closed-circuit cameras have been installed in nine streets in the historic centre of Malaga in a round-the-clock National Police experiment.

Following this pilot scheme, city residents and business owners in the area will be asked their opinion of the project, which could then be extended with the introduction of an extra 52 cameras.

The pilot scheme includes Calle Larios, Calle Strachan, Plaza de la Constitución, Calle Especerías, Calle Cisneros, Calle Granada, Calle Calderería, Plaza de Uncibay, Plaza del Carbon and Calle Méndez Núñez.

However, while the launch of the scheme was widely heralded with a big photo-shoot at the control centre in Plaza de la Merced, questions have since been asked as police have indicated it is their intention to only check the cameras should a crime be reported.

They will then examine recorded camera footage, though many residents have voiced concern should crimes be committed, but not reported.

Normally reliable sources also claim that only a few officers know how to work the equipment which stores footage, and this could mean that tracing images may be a lengthy process.

A 1997 law stipulates any images showing a crime must be brought to a court`s attention within

72 hours or the evidence

is inadmissible, though footage – which will only be seen by the authorities - can be stored for one month.

The law also demands that signs advise citizens of areas under surveillance.
