Dying prisoner on hunger strike may be freed

• 29 Mar 2007 •

A DYING man being fed intravenously while on hunger strike in a prison hospital ward may be freed.

Prison authorities in Alhaurin de la Torre are said to have earlier considered releasing the man - suffering from tuberculosis and AIDS – and who now weighs just 30 kilos. However, he remained in custody after they had been unable to decide whether he could properly care for himself if released.

A request for him to serve the remainder of his sentence for robbery at an open prison was also not realised, with a final decision on his release now likely to be made by the prison governor.

The man has been on hunger strike on previous occasions, but has always ended them in the past.
