Parents plead for release of son’s body year after murder

• 29 Mar 2007 •

THE parents of a young Briton murdered on the Costa del Sol just over a year ago are still waiting for his body – being held in Benalmadena mortuary – to be released so that he can be cremated.

Gary Dunne, aged 22, was stabbed to death after he and a friend were attacked on March 3 last year in Palm Tree Avenue, Benalmadena.

With multiple stab wounds to his body, surgeons were unable to save his life.

His friend was also stabbed, though not seriously.

Gary had lived on the Spanish coast for six years with his parents, Steve and Lee Dunne, and his fiancée Ashley, with whom he had a baby son, Kieran, now aged 18 months.

With a Spaniard now in custody charged in connection with his death - they feel he should get a 25-year prison sentence - his parents are anxious that Gary’s body is cremated in Spain and that his ashes are then returned to a family grave in Liverpool, England.

They would also like a memorial service in England so that family and friends living there can attend.

Since Gary’s death, his parents have met with a judge in a Torremolinos court who they say initially gave them permission to arrange for Gary’s body to be cremated. However, he later withdrew this permission.

They became so frustrated at being unable to obtain any decisive action from the Spanish authorities that their solicitor contacted the British Prime Minister’s residence in Downing Street to seek the assistance of a British Member of the European Parliament.

During a recent visit to England to see family, the Liverpool Echo, the evening newspaper in their home city, reported their dilemma, and with interest increasing through coverage by Radio City and BBC Radio Merseyside, they hope their campaign will gain momentum, with the possibility of a petition with local signatures to put pressure on the British government and Spanish authorities.

Despite all the pressures Steve and Lee find themselves facing, they are encouraged by their grandson Kieran, who they frequently take care of.

“Gary’s fiancée Ashley is doing a fine job bringing him up. He is a real little treasure, is doing fine, and is the image of Gary.

“He is too young to realise it, but he is helping us all,” they said.
