Produce markets woo the hi-tech shoppers

• 29 Mar 2007 •

Biggest and best: Atarazanas market.MALAGA’S produce markets are to go online in a move planned to encourage more people to use the traditional outlets rather than depending on shopping centres.

Two websites will shortly be launched to advise potential customers of products in season plus recipes of interest, and stallholders are expected to finalise other information to be included.

Following an earlier move to meet modern-day demands, many stallholders now accept payment by credit card.

The city council - which has bought two domains for the online launch - has also printed 120,000 leaflets encouraging people to use their local markets, which they claim offer better quality produce than supermarkets and at cheaper prices.

Recently several markets have been upgraded, including El Palo, La Merced, Salamanca, Huelin and Ciudad Jardin, with them additionally opening on Friday afternoons.

The Carranque, Portada Alta and El Carmen markets are also to be improved before the end of the year, and along with the Atarazanas market, will also open on Friday afternoons.

The two sites will be www.mercadosdemalaga.es and www.mercadosdemalaga.com
