Alhambra fights to be a new Seven Wonder
• 29 Mar 2007 •
SPAIN’S very own Alhambra Palace in Granada is battling hard to ensure that it becomes one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.
With little more than three months remaining to vote in a competition that has grabbed immense global attention, the Junta de Andalucia is encouraging people to visit the New Seven Wonders web page and vote for the Islamic-style Alhambra Palace which is facing keen competition from 20 additional possible ‘Wonders’ including six others in Europe.
People worldwide are voting for their favourite sites, and with the winners to be announced in Lisbon, Portugal, on July 7, 2007, tension is now increasingly mounting between many of the contenders.
The great majority of the present Seven Wonders of the World, which are the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Temple of Artemis, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Mausoleum of Maussollos, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Lighthouse of Alexandria, sadly no longer exist, with this leading to an internationally inspired wish in recent years for a new Seven Wonders of the World.
Interest has grown so much – with many nations fighting strongly in the knowledge that inclusion will lead to a huge influx of additional tourist revenue over future decades – voting results will be shown globally.
Competiting for honours alongside Alhambra, which as well as the palace has expansive grand gardens, are the Acropolis (Greece), Hagia Sophia (Turkey), the Taj Mahal (India), Angkor Vat temple (Cambodia), the Pyramid at Chichen Itza (Mexico), the Pyramids of Giza (Egypt), Christ Redeemer (Brazil), the Coliseum (Italy), the Statues of Easter Island (Chile), the Eiffel Tower (France), Stonehenge (England), the Statue of Liberty (USA), the Great Wall of China, Kiyomizu Temple (Japan), the Kremlin and Red Square (Russia), Machu Picchu (Peru), Neuschwanstein Castle (Germany), Petra (Jordan), Sydney Opera House (Australia), and Timbuktu (Mali).
The voting page – in several languages with participants allowed to vote as many times as they like – is www.new7wonders.com | Return to Top
