Exotic species inhabit Benalmadena pond

• 29 Mar 2007 •

Red-eared tortoise: Florida species found in BenalECOLOGISTS have discovered 231 tortoises in the pond of Parque de La Paloma in Benalmadena. The animals were abandoned by their owners who couldn’t or wouldn’t take care of their high-maintenance pets.

During cleaning works on the pond, 231 tortoises, of eight different species, were found, amongst them babies and very young animals. The different species include 151 specimens of the red-eared tortoise whose natural habitat is Florida and six other exotic species. Furthermore, the ecologists found 27 specimens of the endangered, almost extinct indigenous leprous tortoise.

José Maria Lopez, from the local parks and gardens department said that he was going to propose a nursery for these endangered species with the aim of releasing them into their natural habitat.

Overall the fauna in the pond has grown over time. Besides the tortoises, a colony of piranhas also inhabits the pond. They have fully integrated in the local eco-system and fulfil an important function by eliminating the remains of dead animals in the pond.
