Algarve children are overweight

• 05 Apr 2007 •

ALMOST 30 per cent of the children who live in the Algarve have excessive weight, according to a study presented at Algarve’s Faro Health School. The study, based on the evaluation of 1,021 children aged between seven and nine years old was carried out in the scope of the Programme to Fight Infantile Obesity in the Algarve.

The study, which took place during the school year 2005-2006, concluded that 20 per cent of the children were overweight and 10 per cent were suffering from obesity.

The results have been considered as “preoccupying”, by Portuguese health authorities, who have established a link between the excess of weight in children and the reduced socio-economic living conditions in the majority of the countries of Southern Europe.

Quarteira, Portimão, Faro and Silves are the areas where a larger number of obese children were found.

Algarve’s Health Authority (ARS) will work together with Faro Health School experts to study an effective treatment for obese children and carry out a series of campaigns until 2010 to raise awareness of schoolchildren for the need of healthier eating habits, as well as the need to increase their physical activity.
