Alhaurin el Grande asks for European funds

THE Mayor of Alhaurin el Grande, Juan Martin Seron, has announced that the town hall has asked the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for financial help to carry out the municipality’s project for the urban integration and restoration of its historical quarters.

Juan Martin Seron explained that the programme will benefit seven streets and will include modernisation and new pavements and infrastructures, including a retail market in Plaza de la Legion.

The entire project is estimated to cost around six million euros, 1.8 million of which would be funded by the town hall. It is hoped that the remainder will be financed by the ERDF.

Specifically plans include for new stretches of road to be built in Calle Nueva - between Plaza Nueva and Plaza de San Sebastian - and Calle San Sebastian, Altillo, Cilla and Rosales. A new road will be built through the Guardiola area to connect Plaza de la Legion with the fairground.

The Avenida Gerald Brenan stretch of road between the Emilia Olivares School and the library will be repaved and Calle Fuengirola will be restored. According to the mayor, the financial aid will allow for improvement work on public facilities, more parking spaces and the conversion of the current library into a Local Police headquarters.

The new library and the Gerald Brenan foundation would then also be completed.
